To keep the rail in gauge is a large drilling nail which is used to fix rails fastening system to railroad in the track. That is a rail spike, also called as a cut spike or crampon.
A dog spike (cut track spike) which has a pointed penetrating head with square shank is often used to fasten T-shaped railway track to wooden sleepers, to fix a rail and tie plate to the ties in track, and to compromise the top of the rail base,the underside of the spike head is sloped .
